The Dakota Center offers a variety of groups for both children and parents.

*    Floortime Group ages 2 - 5 years old.  Allows children to develop social engagement and provides social interaction time with peers.  The group provides a safe and understanding environment for each child to grow in social interactions.  Participants are grouped by social and emotional development and there is a maximum of 4 children per group.  Any child needing encouragement to engage with others is welcome and encouraged to join.   

*    Social Participation ages 5 - 9 years old.  This group is a social development group for children with social deficits and participants are not limited to a diagnosis.  This group is limited to 8 participants and is geared toward peer interaction, communication, how to ask for and receive help, turn taking and adjusting to change.  The group goal is to address the struggles of peer interactions and succeeding in school social times such at lunch and recess.

*    Social Thinking ages 10 - 15 years old.  This group is a social process group where older children fine tune their social skills and work toward social leadership, learn how to communicate and share with each other social dilemmas and gain peer support.  This group focus is on making friends, maintaining friendships and how to determine when a friendship is healthy or unhealthy.  This group is limited to 8 participants and is not limited to a diagnosis.  The group goal is to address self confidence and communication within a social context and activities are geared in team building skills.

*    Parent Group is a support group for parents and caregivers of children with social challenges.  Parents are invited to come together and share their parenting challenges or to just listen to others and learn that you are not alone.  This group is facilitated by counselor Donald Terrell who specializes in family support and is available to offer home program suggestions, valuable resources and education.

                                           

Group members do not need to be receiving services with The Dakota Center.

Group enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.
